Sixteen

Karl left them as soon as the show was over, which was not surprising. Rhychard was too exhausted to even care. He wanted to get back to his condo and talk to Tryna. Kree assured Rhychard his family was safe, and the elves guarding them would be on the lookout for all forms of danger, not just from the Void. Rhychard wanted to say he was relieved, but he had grown to realize the faerie world could be fickle at the best of times. He didn’t want to think how they would drop the ball at the worst of times.

Once they were home, Kree used his magic to heal the sword cut under Rhychard’s right eye. It was already too late for the wound to be healed completely, so it left a jagged scar down the Warrior’s cheek. He stared at it in his bathroom mirror, pulling at his face in different directions to make it look less noticeable. It didn’t work. A scar was a scar.

“It doesn’t look too bad,” Renny said as she leaned back on the bathroom door.

He glanced over at her, a frown pulling his cheek down and stretching the scar. “It doesn’t look good, either.”

:It looks like what it is, Warrior. A scar from battle.:

:A battle I didn’t fight.:

Kree chose not to answer that last statement.

Renny walked over to where Rhychard stood, his gaze back on the scar he manipulated with his fingers. “Leave it alone. It’s healed. Be thankful for that.”

He closed his eyes, hearing what she wasn’t saying. At least you’re alive. He still didn’t understand how she was there, visible to him, able to communicate. Famallumi explained it as a magical bond between the ring Rhychard wore around his neck, the body possession spell Vargas used, and the magic of the sword. Renny agreed, explaining it as the bond between him and the sword, that thin line that right then was no longer available to him because on the other side of that bond waited an elf trying to take over Rhychard’s soul. The Lore Master Apprentice told him to throw up his barriers, blocking the connection between the Guardian Sword and himself. Rhychard began to feel that loss, the tightening of his chest, the racing of his heart. Without his connection to the sword, he would die. He already experienced that loss once, and the memory was deeply etched into his mind.

:Any word from Tryna?: Rhychard pushed himself away from the sink and opened the door. When he entered the living room, Kree was sprawled out in his usual place on the loveseat, and Famallumi was engulfing a giant bowl of Captain Crunch Crunch Berries at a remarkable pace.

:No, Warrior. I am sorry.: Kree laid his head on the sofa’s arm, his gaze aimed at Renny as she entered the room from the hallway. :Greetings, Renny Saunders. It is good to see you again.:

“You can see me?” She stared at the coshey, her hands on her hips. She turned to see if Famallumi could hear her, as well, but the elf never looked up from his sugar rush in a bowl.
